Brief/
To complete a competition submission for the Masterplanning of the Central Ouseburn area.
Design/
This submission outlined proposals for practical but ambitious interventions aimed at furthering the unique sense of place the Ouseburn has by virtue of its location, proximity to the River Tyne and particular topography. xsite’s approach to this masterplanning exercise was generated by three significant existing conditions.
• The Valley has developed a character and sense of place over three centuries of layered activity; this provides a gritty, relatively small scale development pattern.
• Surrounding urban development has required bridges to fly over the valley in an awe-inspiring and elegant way to connect the east city with the centre.
• The economy of the Valley is always likely to be based on SME creative, supply and artisan activity.
