Extend and refurbish a 1930s detached dwelling in dilapidated condition.
Design/
The approach was to create an extension that is visibly very different
in both massing and materials from the original house. We did not want
to upset the proportions of the ‘wings’ of the house and have produced
a solution to the brief that does not break the roof or verge line at
any point.
In achieving this aim the proposed scheme consists of a single storey
extension the width of the house to the ground floor, opening up the
living, dining and kitchen to the garden and creating an airy and light
set of spaces in which to live.
We sought to open up with glazed sections the elevation of the new
extension as much as possible to give flexibility and generous light to
the living spaces. The living room has a folding glazed partition door
to the garden and glass blocks set in the terrace above to give
daylight to the centre of the room. The kitchen remains at the heart of
the house allowing the dining area to enjoy a close relationship with
the garden through the windows.
