Brief: The Shield, Newcastle, is a 409 bed student accommodation scheme located close to the city centre.
Design: The scheme comprises 3 blocks of student accommodation extending to seven storeys at Stoddart Street to the East, stepping down to four storeys at Clarence Street to the West. The building utilises a palette of external materials including brick, aluminium, bronze coloured cladding and standing seam to animate the facade and break up the visual mass of the three blocks.
Accommodation is split into 207 ‘studio bedrooms’, standalone units with an incorporated kitchen, and 46 flats comprising 4, 5 and 6 bed arrangements around a shared kitchen and living space. Flats feature a high standard of internal finishes and generous provision of work surfaces and integrated storage. Each bedroom includes an en-suite bathroom manufactured off-site by Walker Modular. Additional facilities include a generous common room, study room and gym, with interior design by Naomi Cleaver.
